Enhance Your Elk Hunting Skills: Key Takeaways from 40 Field Training Sessions
Over the past two months, I’ve trained 40 hunters in live elk hunting scenarios, focusing on practical fieldwork rather than lectures. Each session involved real stalks, extensive glassing techniques, and archery setups lasting two to three hours. Throughout this experience, I noticed three common mistakes that stem from the overwhelming amount of content available to hunters today.
This isn’t a critique of hunting content—there are countless valuable skill videos on my channel. However, the issue arises when hunters attempt to apply multiple frameworks simultaneously, leading to analysis paralysis and decision fatigue. To combat this, I emphasize a streamlined approach to hunting strategies.
In my training, I cover essential skills such as effectively marking an animal with the OnX app, recognizing vital landmarks, and interpreting terrain before initiating a stalk. I also stress that proximity is a far more significant factor in archery elk hunting than calling sequences. Understanding these concepts can drastically improve your chances of success.
